CHATHAM | 1870

Crampton 1862 2

Lucy 1869

Lucy alights at Chatham Station, and pauses on the concourse for a few moments to catch her breath.

She feels a hand at her elbow, and turns to see a smiling gentleman. He bows.

‘I couldn’t help but notice that you were travelling alone,’ he says, ‘and Chatham can be a dangerous town to the uninitiated. May I escort you around the significant sights?’

Lucy is immediately conscious of her inexperience in the ways of the world. What would you advise?

pointing_handThe gentleman is correct; a lady should not travel alone. Allow him to escort you around the town.

pointing_handDecline politely. You have a pressing engagement to tour the Lock Hospital, and must not be late.
